Bio

Sally de Broux, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison, was born in Green Bay, and raised in Manitowoc, where she grew up singing songs in four part harmony with her parents and four siblings as they drove hither and yon in various Pontiac station wagons.  She began seriously considering music and vocals as a career twelve years ago when she met her singing and improvisation mentor, San Francisco Bay area jazz vocalist, Rhiannon (of Bobby McFerrin’s Voicestra, SoVoSo, Bowl Full of Sound and Alive!), with whom de Broux continues to study at every opportunity.

Primarily a jazz musician, de Broux enjoys playing with the standards, exploring them with freshness and improvisational flair. She views her voice as an instrument and uses the breadth, depth and range of her instrument to its full advantage. Her repertoire also includes red hot blues as well as eclectic pieces from other genres.

On her recently released CD The Way Love Can Be, de Broux explores the implications of jazz standards with imagination, improvisational daring and nuanced expression. Her musical collaborators on the project include guitarist Cliff Frederiksen, bassist Laurie Lang, drummer John Becker, pianist Jane Reynolds and violinist Randal Harrison Hoecherl (Honor Among Thieves, Harmonious Wail).

A long time resident of Madison, de Broux appears at area venues and festivals such as The Concourse Bar, Café Montmartre, Basie’s, The Hilton, Jazz at Five, The Orton Park Festival and the Willy Street Fair. During the 2004 presentation of Jazz at Five, de Broux sang solo and in ensemble with Gerri di Maggio, Joy Dragland and Jeanne Woodall and their “Bad Boys” band in a set featuring area vocalists. She has performed ensemble improvisation pieces in concert with Rhiannon as well as with Lynette Margulies, Anna Purnell (Reptile Palace Orchestra), Marianne Flemming and Andy Ewen (Honor Among Thieves). Other collaborators include Roger Brotherhood and Doug Brown.
